Deskripsi : Herba, tinggi batang dapat mencapai 2 m, batang menjalar berupa stolon, batang beruas dan diselimut duri-duri yang keras. Daun tunggal, meroset, menjangat; tangkai daun panjangnya sekitar 30 cm atau lebih, kaku, berduri, atau terkadang gundul; helaian daun banyak variasi bentuk, menombak atau memata panah, terkadang bercuping sangat dalam; pada daun tunggal tepi rata ujung daunnya meruncing; pertulangan daun utama (primer) 2−4, permukaan daun gundul, hijau terang. Perbungaan tongkol; panjang tangkai perbungaan sekitar 30 cm atau lebih, berduri; seludang jingga kusam sampai merah gelap di bagian luarnya, bagian dalamnya kuning kusam atau sangat jarang merah tua. Tangkai tongkol tidak jelas, tongkol silindris. Tenda bunga melonjong, ujung segitiga melengkung. Benang sari pendek, sekitar 1 mm. Bakal buah bulat telur. Buah semu, melekat pada tongkol, padat. Biji bulat telur-menjantung.
Ekologi : Persebaran alami di wilayah Asia Tropis dan Subtropis, termasuk di Indonesia (Sumatra, Jawa, Kalimantan, Maluku, dan Papua). Pada umumnya tumbuh pada habitat ekosistem rawa (lahan basah Mesangat−Suwi), hutan riparian, dan hutan ekosistem estuari dengan substrat lumpur.
Kegunaan : Jenis ini berpotensi dimanfaatkan sebagai tanaman hias. Referensi: Li et al., 2010.

IUCN Red List Status
The International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), or in Indonesian, Serikat Internasional Untuk Pelestarian Alam, makes decisions to determine the conservation status of a species or plant. The current categories of the IUCN Red List criteria include extinct (EX), extinct in the wild (EW), critically endangered (CR), endangered (EN), vulnerable (VU), near threatened (NT), least concern (LC), data deficient (DD), and not evaluated (NE).
The CITES List Status
CITES (Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species) , aims to restrict countries from trading protected flora and fauna or those with extremely limited numbers. The CITES status consists of appendices (attachments) numbered I-III. Appendix I is a list of flora and fauna that absolutely cannot be traded because they are critically endangered. Appendix II is a list of flora and fauna that can be traded, but their numbers are limited. Meanwhile, Appendix III is a list of flora and fauna that can be traded because they are abundant in one country but limited in another.
